Rehab Programs in Jacksonville: The Five Levels of Care

Rehab comes in five levels of care, from 24-hour support down to weekly counseling. Knowing them helps you match your loved one to the right program instead of the nearest one.

Why the level of care matters

When you start looking for help, it can seem like every rehab offers the same thing. They don’t. What you are really choosing is how much care your loved one needs, and where they will sleep while they get it.

Too little support can leave someone on their own at the hardest moment. Too much can cost a job or a family routine they didn’t need to give up. The goal is a match. That is what “level of care” means.

These levels aren’t a ladder that everyone climbs. A person can start at any level that fits, and move up or down as things change. The ASAM Criteria, the national standard for matching people to care, says people should be reassessed regularly as they make progress.

We are a guide, not a treatment provider. We don’t diagnose anyone or admit anyone. We explain the options so you can ask better questions.

The five levels side by side

LevelWhere your loved one sleepsOften a fit when
DetoxAt the center, or at home with visitsStopping could cause dangerous withdrawal
Residential (inpatient)At the program, with staff day and nightUse is severe, home isn’t safe or outpatient care hasn’t worked
Partial hospitalization (PHP)At home or in recovery housingSymptoms are serious, but 24-hour care isn’t needed
Intensive outpatient (IOP)At homeMore than weekly counseling is needed, and home is stable
OutpatientAt homeUse is early or milder, or as a step down from a higher level

What each level involves

Detox

Detox helps the body get through withdrawal safely. It is the first step, not the whole treatment. Alcohol, benzodiazepines and opioids are the substances most likely to need it. Read our detox guide before anyone stops suddenly.

Residential treatment

Your loved one lives at the program and has support around the clock, with counseling and groups built into each day. People also call this inpatient rehab. It gives distance from people and places tied to using.

Partial hospitalization

Partial hospitalization (PHP) means treatment during the day and home at night. It is the most structured option that doesn’t involve living at a program.

Intensive outpatient

An intensive outpatient program (IOP) meets several times a week, often in the morning or evening. Many people keep working or caring for family while they attend.

Outpatient

Standard outpatient rehab usually means counseling once or twice a week. It isn’t “less serious.” For the right person it fits well, and it is often how care continues after a higher level.

Support that goes with any level

These aren’t separate levels. They can be part of the plan at almost any stage:

  • Medication-assisted treatment (MAT): buprenorphine, methadone or naltrexone, alongside counseling
  • Dual diagnosis treatment: care for a mental health condition and substance use at the same time
  • Sober living: substance-free recovery housing, and how to check for certification in Florida
  • Aftercare: the plan for staying well once a program ends

How to choose a level of care

Start with safety

Is there a risk of dangerous withdrawal, overdose or self-harm? If so, medical care comes first. In an emergency, call 911. For a crisis, call or text 988.

Take the guide

Our 2-minute level of care guide asks about substances, daily use, home life and past treatment, then suggests a starting point.

Get a professional assessment

A licensed professional makes the actual recommendation. Bring what you have learned, and ask why they chose that level.

Paying for care

Coverage can change with the level of care, so ask about each one.

Questions about levels of care

What are the levels of care in rehab?

The usual levels are detox, residential, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient (IOP) and outpatient care. They run from 24-hour support down to weekly counseling. Each one fits a different amount of need.

How do I know which level my loved one needs?

A licensed professional should assess them. Before that, our 2-minute level of care guide gives you a starting point. It looks at safety, the substance, how often it is used, home life and past treatment.

Does everyone need to start with detox?

No. Detox is for people at risk of withdrawal, such as those who drink heavily every day or use benzodiazepines or opioids. Many people start directly in outpatient care or IOP. Never stop alcohol or benzodiazepines suddenly without medical advice.

Is residential rehab better than outpatient?

Not by itself. It offers more structure, but the right level depends on your loved one’s needs. Someone with a stable home and milder use may do well in IOP or outpatient care, and could lose more than they gain by leaving work and family.

Does insurance decide the level of care?

Insurance doesn’t choose for you, but it may affect what gets paid for. Plans often require approval and may use their own review. Our guide to checking insurance benefits lists what to ask before admission.

Can someone move between levels?

Yes, and they often do. Many people step down from residential to PHP or IOP, then outpatient care. Others step up if they are struggling, and the plan changes with them.

Not sure where to start? The guide takes about two minutes.
