Start with what’s in town
Because St. Augustine is the county seat, you live near the offices that serve all of St. Johns County. That can make the first few steps simpler than in a smaller town. If you aren’t sure where to begin, SAMHSA’s free, confidential National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) can refer you to treatment and support near you, any hour of the day.
- Free naloxone at the health department. In a 2023 notice, the Florida Department of Health in St. Johns County said adults 18 and older who are at risk of an opioid overdose, or who may witness one, can pick up free naloxone (Narcan) nasal spray kits at 200 San Sebastian View, weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. No appointment is needed, and the department said people who get kits also receive referrals for substance use help. Call 904-506-6081 to confirm before you go.
- County Social Services. St. Johns County Health and Human Services runs a Social Services division that connects residents with resources. Its advisory council advises the County Commission on health, mental health and substance abuse matters.
- The Clerk of Court. A Marchman Act petition is filed with the Clerk of Court in the county where your loved one is located. Call the St. Johns County Clerk’s office to ask how it accepts filings, and read our Marchman Act guide first.
When the right program is up the road
The listing below covers St. Augustine area ZIP codes from 32080 on Anastasia Island to 32092 and 32095 in the northern part of the county. If the level of care your loved one needs isn’t offered nearby, or your insurance network is stronger in Duval County, Jacksonville is the next stop.
- I-95 north is the main route to Jacksonville’s Southside, where many programs are, including a group near Corporate Square Boulevard.
- US-1 north runs roughly alongside I-95 and is a slower backup when the interstate is jammed.
- A1A north follows the coast through Ponte Vedra to the Jacksonville Beaches.
From the southern parts of the county, it is a real drive. For care that meets several times a week, like an intensive outpatient program (IOP), that drive adds up. For residential care, you make the trip at the start and then for family visits.
Stay close or go to Jacksonville?
Staying close may fit when
- Your loved one needs outpatient care several days a week
- Family support at home is steady and safe
- A nearby program offers the right level of care and takes your coverage
Looking north may fit when
- The level of care needed, such as medical detox or residential care, isn’t available nearby
- Your plan’s in-network programs are mostly in Duval County
- Some distance from old routines and people would help
Withdrawal from alcohol and some drugs can be dangerous. If detox may be needed, talk to a doctor before your loved one cuts back or stops.
