Fernandina Beach Rehab: Getting From Amelia Island to Care

Living on an island shapes how a family gets to treatment. Here is how Fernandina Beach families can reach programs, and what Nassau County offers close to home.

Emergency: call 911 · Crisis: call or text 988

Off the island and into Jacksonville

  • A1A (SR-200) west is the main road off Amelia Island. It runs to Yulee and I-95.
  • I-95 south then crosses into Duval County and runs through the Northside, past the airport area, to downtown and on to the Southside, where many programs are.
  • A1A south follows the coast toward Mayport, where the route crosses the St. Johns River by ferry. It’s a lovely drive, but for intake day most families use I-95.

Because one main road carries most traffic off the island, a crash or heavy summer traffic can slow everything down. Leave extra time on any day that matters.

Nassau County resources

Your county services come from Nassau County. These are the ones we checked on official sites:

  • The Florida Department of Health in Nassau County (DOH-Nassau). Its main number is 904-875-6100. Its Fernandina Beach main office is at 1620 Nectarine Street. The office’s web page lists services such as family planning, school health, refugee health and certificates, not addiction treatment, so call first to ask what referrals and help are available.
  • Naloxone. Florida’s iSaveFL program, run by Florida DCF with the Department of Health, helps families find free naloxone in their community. Our free naloxone guide explains how it works.
  • State-funded care. LSF Health Systems coordinates state-funded behavioral health care in a region that includes Nassau County. Read our Medicaid and state-funded care page.
  • The Marchman Act. A petition goes to the Clerk of Court in the county where your loved one is located, so for someone on the island, that’s Nassau County. See our Marchman Act guide.

When your loved one doesn’t want to leave the island

Some people push back on any program that means leaving home, especially a live-in one. That’s common, and it’s worth listening to. Ask what worries them most: work, pets, kids, money or being away from family.

Then look for answers together. Some worries have practical fixes, like job-protected leave, a relative to care for a pet or a program with regular family visits. Others point to a different level of care, such as outpatient treatment with some telehealth sessions.

If the talk keeps going in circles, our guide on how to talk to a loved one about rehab has ideas that help many families.

Planning for the distance

Choose the level of care first

Then look at the drive. Daily or near-daily programs are hardest from the island, so ask about telehealth, evening groups or a live-in option if that would work better.

Think about family visits

Residential programs often have family days or family sessions. Ask when they happen, so you can plan the trip and arrange time off.

Plan the way home

Before discharge, ask for aftercare close to Fernandina Beach, like counseling, medication follow-up and local AA and NA meetings.

Fernandina Beach rehab: common questions

Are there rehab programs in Fernandina Beach?

The listing above shows DCF-licensed programs we have in the 32034 ZIP code. If it is short, Yulee and Jacksonville’s Northside are the next places to look, and our full list of Jacksonville treatment centers covers Duval County.

Does the Nassau County health department offer addiction treatment?

Its Fernandina Beach office page doesn’t list addiction treatment among its services. Call 904-875-6100 to ask about referrals and naloxone, and use the listing above for treatment programs.

Is it worth going to a program far from the island?

Sometimes. Distance can help a person step away from old routines, and the right level of care matters more than the drive. Our guide to which level of care fits can help you decide.

Can someone from Fernandina Beach do treatment by telehealth?

Some programs offer telehealth for parts of outpatient care, such as counseling. It isn’t right for every level of care, and detox and residential care happen in person. Ask each program what it offers.

How do we keep recovery going once our loved one is home?

Ask the program for an aftercare plan with local appointments before discharge. Free meetings and family groups help too. Our family support groups page lists options for you.

What if we need help tonight?

In an emergency, call 911. For a crisis, call or text 988. Florida’s Poison Control Centers can answer overdose questions at 1-800-222-1222, but call 911 first if someone isn’t breathing.

The island is a starting point, not a barrier.
