Northside Jacksonville Drug Rehab: Getting to Care From North of the River

The Northside covers a lot of ground, from older streets near downtown to quiet stretches off Heckscher Drive. Here is how families up here can find care and get to it.

How far is treatment from the Northside?

The Northside is one of the largest parts of Jacksonville. It takes in neighborhoods close to downtown, the areas around the airport, and the land along the river out toward Heckscher Drive. So the answer depends a lot on which end you live in.

Many of the city’s licensed programs are on the Southside, which means a real drive for most Northside families. There are two usual ways to get there:

  • I-95 south through downtown, across the river and on toward the Southside.
  • I-295 East Beltway across the Dames Point Bridge, then south through Arlington.

Both cross the St. Johns River, and both slow down at rush hour. For a one-time trip to a residential program, that is fine. For outpatient care several days a week, the drive adds up fast, so plan for it before you choose.

If you live on the far north end, Nassau County may be closer than the Southside. Yulee is just up I-95.

When the drive matters, and when it matters less

Being close matters most for

  • IOP and outpatient care, where your loved one comes back several times a week
  • Medication visits, since some medications for opioid use disorder mean regular clinic trips
  • Family sessions, when you want to be able to show up after work

The drive matters less for

  • Residential care, where your loved one lives on site for a while
  • Inpatient detox, which is usually a short stay
  • Telehealth sessions, if the program offers them and they fit your loved one’s needs

If your loved one drinks heavily or uses sedatives every day, talk to a doctor before they stop. Withdrawal from alcohol and some drugs can be dangerous. Our detox guide explains why.

Northside resources worth knowing

For Veterans

The VA’s Jacksonville North VA Clinic is at 145 Heron Bay Road, Jacksonville, FL 32218. Its VA.gov page lists addiction and substance use care, including medication-assisted treatment, and says Veterans can see a case manager as a walk-in during business hours for an assessment. Some services need a referral, so check the clinic page before you go. Our veterans and TRICARE guide explains how VA care works.

Free naloxone

The Florida Department of Health in Duval County (DOH-Duval) gives out NARCAN (naloxone) free of charge. Its NARCAN distribution page lists distribution sites, including its Environmental Health office at 921 N. Davis St. (32209). If your loved one uses opioids, keep a kit at home. A place to make calls and fill out forms

The Jacksonville Public Library has Northside locations including Highlands Regional (1826 Dunn Avenue), the Dallas Graham Branch (2304 Myrtle Avenue N) and the Bradham and Brooks Branch (1755 Edgewood Avenue W). The library offers public computers and free WiFi, which help if you need to fill out an insurance form or join a video intake.

Northside families ask

Are there rehab programs on the Northside itself?

The list above shows licensed programs we have checked in Northside ZIP codes. If it is short, look at Downtown and Springfield, which is a shorter trip than the Southside for many Northside homes.

My loved one is a Veteran. Where do we start?

The VA says to apply for VA health care first, then talk with a VA provider or contact the local VA clinic. In a crisis, the Veterans Crisis Line helps any Veteran: call 988 and press 1.

How can my loved one get to outpatient care without a car?

Use JTA’s trip planner to map a bus route at the time the program meets. United Way 211’s Ride United offers free rides in several counties to people who qualify, so dial 2-1-1 and ask. Some programs also offer telehealth sessions.

Can we choose a program in Nassau County instead?

Yes. Many families on the north end look both ways. Ask your plan which programs are in network on each side of the line. State-funded care through LSF Health Systems covers both Duval and Nassau counties.

What if something happens in the middle of the night?

In an emergency, call 911. For a crisis, call or text 988. If your loved one has used opioids and won’t wake up, call 911 and give naloxone if you have it.

A long drive is worth it for the right level of care.
