A big part of town with long roads
The Westside runs from neighborhoods near the old city core, around Lane Avenue and Commonwealth Avenue, out past I-295 toward the Cecil area and the rural edge of Duval County. The main roads are I-10, Normandy Boulevard, 103rd Street, Wilson Boulevard and Blanding Boulevard.
Many of Jacksonville’s programs are on the Southside, on the other side of the river. From the Westside there are two usual ways there:
- I-10 east into downtown, then I-95 south across the Fuller Warren Bridge.
- I-295 south and east across the Buckman Bridge, past Mandarin, then north toward the Southside.
Either way it is a real drive, and it gets slower at rush hour. Clay County is also close: Blanding Boulevard and Roosevelt Boulevard (US-17) both lead toward Orange Park, which some Westside families find easier to reach.
Out past I-295, toward the western edge of the county, homes are farther apart and the drives are longer still.
Two ways to set up care from the Westside
| A program close to home | A program across town | |
|---|---|---|
| Works well for | IOP, outpatient counseling and medication visits that happen often | Residential care or detox, where the trip is made once or twice |
| Family sessions | Easier to attend after work | Plan ahead, and ask if any are offered by video |
| Getting there without a car | A bus trip may be workable | Harder; ask the program about rides or telehealth |
| What to ask | Do you have the level of care my loved one needs? | Can my loved one step down to outpatient care closer to home afterward? |
Plan the step after detox
Some Westside families find a detox program across town, then realize no one planned what comes next. Detox helps the body get through withdrawal safely. It isn’t treatment on its own.
Before admission, ask the detox program where your loved one can go next, and whether that place is closer to home. A plan that starts across town and continues on the Westside is common, and it can work well. Our aftercare guide explains what comes later.
Westside resources you can use
Free naloxone on the Westside
DOH-Duval gives out NARCAN (naloxone) free of charge. Its NARCAN distribution page lists the Wesconnett WIC and Nutrition Services office at 5917 105th St. (32244) as one distribution site. Call DOH-Duval’s overdose prevention line at 904-253-1488 to confirm before you go.
Libraries for forms and video calls
Westside locations of the Jacksonville Public Library include the Charles Webb Wesconnett Regional Library (6887 103rd Street), the West Branch (1425 Chaffee Road S) and the Westbrook Branch (2809 Commonwealth Avenue). Each library location offers public computers and free WiFi, useful for insurance portals, Medicaid applications or a video intake.
Rides and referrals
United Way 211 is free and open 24/7. Its Ride United program offers free rides in several counties to people who qualify, which can help with appointments. Dial 2-1-1 or call 1-904-632-0600.
Military families
Many Westside families are tied to NAS Jacksonville. If your loved one has TRICARE or VA care, read our veterans and TRICARE guide before you choose a program, since approvals may be needed.

Westside families ask
Is it worth driving across town for rehab?
For residential care or detox, often yes, because the right level of care matters more than the drive. For care several times a week, a long drive can make it hard to keep going. Ask whether your loved one can start far away and continue closer to home.
Are Clay County programs an option for us?
Yes. Many Westside homes are close to the Clay line. Ask your plan which Orange Park or Clay County programs are in network, and see our Orange Park page.
How do we pay if my loved one has no insurance?
Start with our rehab without insurance plan. State-funded care through LSF Health Systems serves people who qualify in Duval and nearby counties.
Where can we get naloxone on the Westside?
DOH-Duval lists its Wesconnett WIC and Nutrition Services office on 105th St. as a free NARCAN site. Naloxone is also sold over the counter at pharmacies. Our free naloxone in Jacksonville page has more.
What if my loved one won’t go?
That is common. Our help for families section has guides on starting the talk and on Florida’s Marchman Act if your loved one is in danger.
