The short answer
Often yes, at least in part. Most health plans include some coverage for substance use treatment, but how much they pay depends on your plan, the level of care and whether the program is in network. The only reliable way to know is to call the number on the insurance card.
This page is the quick version. For the laws behind this coverage and a full walk-through, read our main guide: does insurance cover rehab in Florida?
Why the answer depends on your plan
“Covered” doesn’t mean free. Two people with the same insurance company can have very different benefits. We never say that a specific insurer covers a specific program, because plans change and we can’t see yours.
- Network. An in-network program usually costs you less than one outside the network.
- Prior approval. Some plans want approval before detox or residential care, or they may not pay.
- Your share. Deductibles, copays and coinsurance decide what you pay out of pocket.
- Medical need. Plans usually pay for the level of care they agree is medically necessary. That can change during treatment.

Quick insurance questions
Does insurance cover detox?
Often, when it is medically necessary. Ask the plan whether prior approval is needed and which programs are in network. Our detox guide explains how detox works.
Will my insurance cover a rehab outside Florida?
It depends on the plan. Some plans limit coverage to a local network, so ask before you travel. Getting care close to home can also make it easier for family to stay involved.
How much will I pay?
We don’t quote prices, because they vary by plan and program. Our page on what drives the cost of rehab explains what to ask so you can get a real number.
Will my employer see that I used insurance for rehab?
Plans have privacy rules, but the person who holds the policy may get statements. Read is rehab confidential for more, and see our other rehab questions.
