A plain word about “free rehab”
Some ads promise free rehab. Be careful. Real low cost care exists, but it usually comes from public funding, sliding fee scales or community groups, not from a stranger on the phone who wants your insurance details.
If someone offers free travel, free rent or cash to attend a program, stop. Florida law bans paying people for patient referrals. Our patient brokering red flags page explains what to watch for.
Low cost doesn’t have to mean low quality. Publicly funded programs are run by licensed providers, and you can check any program’s license with Florida DCF. Our DCF license lookup guide shows how.
Where low cost care comes from
Paid for by public funds
- State-funded treatment for people who are uninsured or underinsured with low income, funded through Florida DCF’s regional managing entity
- Florida Medicaid for people who qualify, through a Medicaid managed care plan
- VA health care for eligible Veterans
Lower cost or free support
- Sliding fee scale programs that charge based on income
- Mutual-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and SMART Recovery, which are free to attend
- Family groups such as Al-Anon and Nar-Anon for the people who love someone with a substance use disorder
Mutual-help groups are a support, not a replacement for medical care. If your loved one may need detox, talk to a doctor first. Stopping alcohol or some drugs suddenly can be dangerous.
How to find low cost programs near Jacksonville
1. Call SAMHSA’s National Helpline
SAMHSA’s National Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP (4357) is free, confidential and open 24 hours a day, every day, in English and Spanish. TTY users can call 1-800-487-4889. SAMHSA says that if you have no insurance or are underinsured, it will refer you to the state office responsible for state-funded treatment, and it can often refer you to facilities that charge on a sliding fee scale or accept Medicare or Medicaid.
2. Search FindTreatment.gov
FindTreatment.gov is SAMHSA’s treatment locator. Search by your ZIP code, then look at each listing’s payment details for things like Medicaid, sliding fee scale or free care. Call to confirm, since details change.
3. Ask about state-funded care
In Northeast Florida, state-funded behavioral health care is coordinated by LSF Health Systems, the managing entity contracted with Florida DCF. It serves Duval, St. Johns, Clay, Nassau and other counties. Ask any provider you call whether it receives state funding and whether your loved one qualifies. Read more on our Medicaid and state-funded care page.
4. Ask every program about a sliding scale
Even private programs sometimes have a reduced fee, a payment plan or a scholarship bed. You won’t know unless you ask. Ask for any offer in writing.
5. Consider outpatient care and medication
Outpatient care usually costs less than live-in care because there are no overnight stays. For opioid use disorder, medication-assisted treatment in an outpatient clinic may be an option. Ask a doctor which level of care fits.

Low cost rehab: common questions
Is there truly free rehab in Jacksonville?
Some care can cost your family little or nothing, mainly state-funded treatment for people who qualify, Medicaid and VA care. Free mutual-help meetings are also available. See our guide to free and state-funded care, and confirm costs with each program.
Why is there sometimes a wait for state-funded care?
Public funding is limited, so some programs have waiting lists, especially for residential beds. Ask what help is available while you wait, such as outpatient counseling or medication for opioid use disorder. Put your name on more than one list if you can.
Are free support groups enough on their own?
For some people in recovery they are a big help. For someone who needs detox or more structured care, they work well alongside treatment. A doctor or an assessment can help you decide.
What does sliding scale mean?
It means the program sets your fee based on income and household size. Bring proof of income when you ask. Ask for the fee in writing before your loved one starts.
Can the SAMHSA helpline tell me which programs accept Medicaid?
SAMHSA says it can often refer callers to facilities that accept Medicare or Medicaid, or that charge on a sliding fee scale. The call is free and confidential. SAMHSA says it won’t ask for personal information, though it may ask for a ZIP code to find local resources.
Where can I find help for myself as a family member?
Family groups like Al-Anon and Nar-Anon are free. Our help for families section has more. In an emergency, call 911. For a crisis, call or text 988.
