Where San Marco sits

San Marco and the Southbank face downtown across the St. Johns River. Three bridges link them: the Main Street Bridge, the Acosta Bridge and the Fuller Warren Bridge on I-95. Hendricks Avenue and San Jose Boulevard run south, and the 32217 ZIP code takes in the neighborhoods farther down San Jose Boulevard.

Heading east, Atlantic Boulevard, Beach Boulevard and University Boulevard lead toward the Southside, where many of the city’s programs are. I-95 south is another way. From most of San Marco, that is a fairly short drive, which makes outpatient care easier to keep up with.

Downtown is even closer. If you ever need the courthouse or county offices, you are a bridge away.

If you live in the southern part of 32217, along San Jose Boulevard, Baymeadows may be closer than the Southside. Check that page too.

Worried the neighbors will know?

In a close-knit neighborhood, many families hold off on getting help because they fear people will find out. That fear is understandable. Here is what helps:

  • Treatment records have extra privacy protection. Federal rules (42 CFR Part 2) protect substance use treatment records more strictly than many other health records. Programs generally need written consent to share them. Our is rehab confidential? answer explains the basics.
  • You can look a little farther away. Some families choose a program in another part of town for outpatient care. With the bridges and I-95, that is still a workable drive.
  • Ask about telehealth. Some programs offer counseling by video for some sessions. Ask whether it fits your loved one’s level of care.
  • Work leave can be private too. Many people share details only with HR. See FMLA and job protection.

Privacy matters, but it shouldn’t be the reason your loved one waits. A calm, private first call to a licensed program is a good next step.

What a first call can sound like

You don’t need to have it all figured out before you pick up the phone. You can say something like: “My son is drinking every day and I’m not sure what kind of care he needs. Can you do an assessment, and do you take our insurance?”

Then listen, take notes and ask what happens next. Ask for the name of the person you spoke with. If the program pushes you to decide on the spot, it is fine to say you will call back. Licensed programs that are a good fit don’t need to rush you.

A quiet first week of calls

Do the homework at the library

The San Marco Branch of the Jacksonville Public Library is at 1513 LaSalle Street. Library locations offer public computers and free WiFi if you would rather not research this at home.

Call the plan, then two programs

Ask the plan which programs are in network for the level of care you need. Then call two of them and compare their answers.

Ask how they protect privacy

Ask who will see your loved one’s records, what needs consent, and how the program talks to family members.

Choosing between programs?

Use one checklist for every call so the answers are easy to compare.

San Marco families ask

Can I make the first call for my loved one?

Yes. Many first calls come from a parent or spouse. The program may need to speak with your loved one before admission, but you can ask questions, check coverage and learn the next steps on your own.

Will anyone find out my loved one is in treatment?

Federal rules give substance use treatment records strong privacy protection, and programs generally need written consent to share them. Ask each program how it handles records and family calls.

Is it better to go to a program outside San Marco?

It can be, if privacy is a big worry or a certain program fits better. The Southside and Mandarin are both a workable drive. Just keep the level of care first.

Are there programs on the Southbank itself?

The list above shows licensed programs we have checked in San Marco ZIP codes. If it is short, see our Southside and Riverside, Avondale and Ortega pages.

Can my loved one keep working during treatment?

Often, yes, with an intensive outpatient program (IOP) or standard outpatient care. Some programs hold sessions in the evening. Our IOP guide explains the schedule.
